I am at a mechanical machine made of silvery metal. A woman is there, she is training another woman how to use the machine. (This woman is my wife's colleague in waking life, I'll call her The Colleague here.)

It has a curved tube with an opening at both ends. It almost looks like a large piece of silver metal macaroni laying on its side, with both open ends facing us. There is a crank in the middle; the rest of the apparatus looks like an anvil that this is all set upon.

There is a baby chick, which is dusky blue. I think The Colleague feeds it into the machine? Or it goes in there on its own? All I remember seeing is it willingly hop into the left hand opening of the metal macaroni tube, its little feet and blue fuzzy feathers disappearing into it. Then the crank is turned, and I hear the baby chick being destroyed. The remains come out the other end of the metal tube (I assume, I don’t remember seeing this either).

I do see a tray full of the remains of this chick and other remains, possibly other baby birds. I remember being distressed about this in the dream, but not on the immediate level, more like an underlying unease. I don’t like that this is happening, but I don’t feel like I have the authority to protest or question it.

I think I need to just observe and learn; maybe there is a reason for this that I don’t understand yet. The Colleague is inspecting the remains and training the woman with her to do so as well. They are trying to see if the remains are any good. The Colleague looks through it for a moment, then shakes her head and says “I don’t trust it. I don’t trust it.” Now her trainee is expected to scrape the remains off of the tray and throw them in the trash. ~ Anonymous

In my dream, I was wearing clothing that looked like it was from the 1800s, and I was in a large community of settlers of some kind. I was still my age, almost 40 years old, yet my only job was to find a husband in this village. I had no other skills or role within the community, but I felt as if I had had a different life before, and couldn’t remember why or how it had ended. Now, I was trying to fit into this collective, but struggling to assimilate and feeling as if there was something from my past identity I needed to hide.

We were homesteading and I had to work with the other women to prepare them for marriage and motherhood, including setting up their homes. I was talking to another woman who was also older who had been assigned a new husband and house. She was expressing how it was difficult to adjust but that ultimately she was very happy with her new home and trusted in our elders’ guidance. The elders seemed to be ever present in all our decisions and conversations, yet I never interacted with them directly. We transformed her small kitchen and dining room to accommodate a wedding banquet where the elders sat at the head of the table. I was far in the back, marveling at how many people we managed to fit into this small home. Then we went to a large gathering outside where we all danced to music played on fiddles.

There was a young man who was attempting to dance with me in this collective dance, but I tried to move away from him. I knew he was in courtship with a young woman who was playing the fiddle and trying to catch his eye. It struck me that he was too young and did not know of the things I knew from the past, even if I could not quite remember them. I tried to dance away and was swept up in the turns and twists of the group. They were all singing the lyrics over and over, chanting, “And the book goes on! And the book goes on!” I tried to keep pace but I didn’t know the dance and kept making the wrong moves. Finally I was able to break free and I went back to the house, which was near an old bridge.

Large trucks were carrying these round orbs piled high, heading towards a bright alien-like data center and generator. There were militant, futurist men directing the trucks. Over the bridge, old cars were traveling, driven by people who seemed to be in retreat. I felt compelled to help them travel across, as I saw an elderly couple in a small sedan nearly drive off the overpass. I ran to help them, but as the car was righted and they left, the supervising men told me to return to the home. They said we must stay away from the highly explosive orbs, and that this tech cargo was not meant for us to interfere with. They sent me off with a man who was part of the village and dressed like a farmer. He looked a little inebriated and disheveled but was still assigned to chaperon me. He was carrying a dead plant and told me he had removed it from the nursery in the house. He said the smell would not be good for the children. ~ Anonymous
